Laos strives to become a regional power transmission center by 2025

Laos is developing a strategic plan to become a regional power transmission center by 2025.

According to the "Vientiane Times" reported on the 14th, Laos Energy and Mining Energy Administration Director Sichard Boudshakittilath recently introduced the plan in a related seminar.

Sichad believes that in order to promote this strategy, Laos signed a tripartite power trade agreement with Thailand and Malaysia in 2017, and Laofang will use the Thai transmission network to sell 100 megawatts of electricity to Malaysia.

In 2014, the Singapore government also expressed interest in purchasing electricity from Laos through transmission lines in Malaysia and Thailand.

According to this plan, Laos is expected to export 14,800 megawatts of electricity annually to neighboring countries by 2025.

Sichade said that in the next six years, Laos plans to export 9000 MW, 5,000 MW, 500 MW, 200 MW and 100 MW of electricity to Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia respectively.

Laos is currently developing policy parameters and guidelines that will help modernize the energy industry. A high-quality modern grid that provides renewable energy will be key to achieving many of the country's sustainable development goals.

According to a report by the Lao Ministry of Energy and Mines, Laos has 61 hydropower stations with an installed capacity of 7,207 megawatts and an annual production of about 37,366 kWh. Another 36 hydropower stations are currently in different stages of construction. These plants have a total installed capacity of 4,184 megawatts, which will add 20,892 kWh per year to the country's power grid.

These projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2020, meaning that Laos will have about 100 hydropower stations. (Source: VNA)
