Liu Zhenya held talks with China’s Special Representative for Climate Change Xie Zhenhua and the TUSDG delegation

On April 3, Liu Zhenya, Chairman of GEIDCO, met with Xie Zhenhua, the Special Representative for Climate Change Affairs of China and Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development Goals at the Tsinghua University (TUSDG). The two sides had in-depth exchanges on how to accelerate the development of Global Energy Interconnection (GEI), address climate change and achieve sustainable development, with important consensus reached. He Jiankun, director of academic committee of TUSDG, Li Zhengyi, executive deputy director of TUSDG also attended the meeting.

Liu Zhenya remarked that the sustainable development of humanity faces major challenges such as resource depletion, climate change, environmental pollution, poverty and health issues, especially the dire situation in climate change. The core of sustainable development lies in clean development. Accelerating the implementation of Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) and "Two Replacements, One Increase and One Restore" provides an important vehicle for achieving clean development, as well as a fundamental solution that is technically feasible, economically competitive, practical and calculatable. Currently, GEI has been incorporated into the framework for the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, and Global Environmental Governance. It is hoped that both sides can deepen pragmatic cooperation and carry out joint research and action on climate change, and make great efforts together to accelerate GEI development.

Xie Zhenhua said that since the establishment of GEIDCO, has actively promoted and implemented the China’s Initiative on Global Energy Interconnection, and made a lot groundbreaking work in concept promotion, strategic planning, international cooperation and project implementation, etc. TUSDG hopes to cooperate with GEIDCO to jointly carry out research in related fields, deepen cooperation, and bring forth China’s perspectives for world energy transition and sustainable development.

The Institute for Sustainable Development Goals at the Tsinghua University (TUSDG) was established in December 2017. Its aims to establish a leading platform to conduct interdisciplinary research, education and training and collaborate with global partners to address challenges in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the institute aspires to become a leading think tank in China on SDGs related policies, through cooperative partnerships with relevant government agencies. TUSDG is currently conducting research on the strategy and roadmap for China's low-carbon development and transition among other important researches.
